New Music Friday: Thoughts and Takeaways
Davido, Burna, Asake and Zinoleesky, among others, gave playlists a breath of fresh air on Friday, causing a tug of war among fans on who impressed the most.
Last Friday brought a frenzy in the music space like we’ve not experienced in a while. Burna, Davido, DJ Spinall/Asake, Zinoleesky, Mavin, Gabzy, Obongjayar, Waje/Falz and WhiteMoney all had singles to drop for music fans, which opened the way for a bustling weekend which witnessed an FA Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as the AMVCA.
Even after Tsimikas turned Wembley red and celebrities’ outfits got tongues wagging and drooling uncontrollably, arguments haven’t stopped on who won the ‘best’ Friday single.
Davido released Stand Strong featuring The Samples, Burna Boy followed up his Maddison Square Garden (MSG) preamble of Last last with an official release and DJ Spinall jumped on the Mr Money fast-rising music magic. Asa may have evolved with her last album but Zinoleesky remains nostalgic and made that known in Loving you. Mavin might have had a group collabo on Overdose but it was WhiteMoney’s Na We We that had the effect.
No matter how determined WhiteMoney is, the disparaging remarks that the Big Brother champion got from tweeps should make him rethink his music career. His previous single wasn’t actually bad, I talked about it, and how BBNaija isn’t the best platform for aspiring musicians but this single ehn, e get as e be.
For Davido and Burna Boy, it was business as usual as they showed why they are highly rated and revered. Odogwu sampled Toni Braxton’s He wasn’t man enough while OBO was inspired by what Kan-YE did with If to do an inspirational choir collabo.
Expectedly, rivalry continued for their fans with each camp slugging it out on who had the better delivery and numbers. Davido himself had come out to quote a tweet about Stand Strong being atop the music polls with “001”.
However, it was not too long after before Burna Boy’s fans came with reports that their fave had climbed to the top.
Despite the bants that have overshadowed other singles released on Friday, my opinion is that DJ Spinall and Asake’s Palazzo has the best groove and replay value. The characteristic rhythmic semi-rap style Asake delivers his lines is captivating and addictive. It’s a pretty party jam.
In all, last Friday had everything. Damini gave the streets a breakfast anthem – “e don cast, last last, na everybody go chop breakfast.” David gave those going through hard times something to take hold body.
